Description
These bronze bookends, represent a copy of the Whaleman’s Statue in New Bedford, Massachusetts that was erected in 1913.The bookends were produced by the Jennings Brothers Foundry in Bridgeport Ct. that originally opened in 1890 and operated until the 1950’s.
These bookends are likely over 100 years old (with proper patina) and I know this because they belonged to my grandmother and sat on her “library” table in her home all my life…over 80 years ago.
I acquired them from her and they are in excellent condition with no damage.
After the demise of the Jennings Brothers Foundry, the original casts were purchased by another foundry in the 1950’s and they continued to make copies over the years.
HOWEVER, these copies had none of the detail of the originals and are a poor substitute for the originals.
I’m downsizing and it’s time to sell things!
